This Orchestra is for students with at least 6 months of string experience. This ensemble is audition based and features the use of electric instruments. The music played in this ensembles varies from Rock to modern pop music. Students get to explore improvisation and modern techniques. The students also learn how to run an electronic sound system. Students are also moving and playing through dance and other movement in the performance space.
This ensemble performs at local sporting events, elementary schools, and other community events. This orchestra has been feature on 5 different news stories in the last 4 months. The orchestra also had the unique opportunity to perform with a rock legend! The orchestra performed with Grammy winning electric violinist, Mark Wood. Mark Wood was the founder of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and has been very helpful to help start the Westport Electric Orchestra.
This electric orchestra is one of the very first of it’s kind! Westport is starting a new trend in school orchestra programs!
6th Grade Orchestra
First year students or students who enter Westport with or without experience are members of this orchestra. The 6th grade orchestra consists of 80 students. In 6th Grade orchestra, members are taught the basics of reading music, holding and playing the instruments and various basic string techniques. Students play a variety of music in their first year. Students use the Essential Elements book 1 and often make it to book 2 before the end of the year. Last year, the 6th grade orchestra had the most students in in the JCPS 6th Grade All-County Orchestra out of any school that participated! The 6th Grade orchestra also received 1+ ratings at the KMEA Orchestra Assessment in the spring.
7th Grade Orchestra
Students with at least two years of playing experience that meet every day. Students in this class start to explore more advanced techniques such as shifting, extensions and vibrato.
8th Grade Orchestra
Students with at least three years of playing experience that meet every day. Students in this class start to explore more advanced techniques such as shifting, extensions and vibrato as well as starting to explore high school level literature.
Full Symphony Orchestra
Westport has one of the very few middle school full symphony orchestras! Every spring we get all students from Orchestra, Band and Chorus together to put on a massive production on our spring concert! This often features over 300 students from 6th through 8th grade! Last year the group performed the song “Skyfall” from the James Bond film and written by Adele.
